The animal husbandry department distributed 10,000 eggs to students of schools run by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to celebrate World Egg Day. It distributed 4,681 eggs in PMC schools and 6,609 eggs in PCMC schools.
World Egg Day is celebrated, as per the decision of the International Egg Commission, on the second Friday of every October. The first World Egg Day was celebrated in 1996 and as a part of this celebration, the animal husbandry department is vested with the responsibility of organising workshops and egg distribution by the state government.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists objected to the distribution of eggs by citing Navratri fasting by some students and teachers. Additional commissioner and officiating commissioner of animal husbandry SN Bagade said MNS activists objected to the egg distribution and protested at a school in Bibvewadi.
