A year after the death of 35-year-old Sachin Kadam, working as a supervisor at a city-based automobile company, the police have arrested his wife, her mother and her friend for abetting suicide. However, the family members of the deceased are saying it is  unjust as the accused are not charged with murder.

While the high court has directed the Haveli police to probe into the case and submit a report, the police claim that there are no eyewitnesses to prove it is a murder. Hence, a murder case could not be lodged against the accused.

A case of abetment to suicide was registered with Haveli police on July 20, 2012 by the deceased’s father, Suresh Kadam against Sachin’s wife Reshma, her mother Usha Gaikwad and Reshma’s friend Shriram alias Hemant Wagh. On Tuesday, the three were arrested and remanded in police custody till Saturday and later they were remanded in judicial custody.

Sachin’s sister Shaila Pawar said, “My brother suspected that Reshma had an illicit relationship with Hemant. And they regularly fought over the issue.”

“On July 1, 2012, Reshma called us and said that my brother has committed suicide by stabbing himself,” she added.

Shaila further said that initial post-mortem reports stated that the victim died due to incised wounds inflicted on him which led to hemorrhagic shock. However, the expert’s report later showed that the injuries in his body cannot be self-inflicted but were caused by someone. Accordingly, the Bombay High Court ordered a probe in this regard.

“Even after investigating the case for more than a year, the police have arrested them for abetment to suicide. Now, they are asking us to provide eye-witness and evidence,” she alleged.

Assistant police inspector Tukaram Patil said, “The trio have been arrested after their bail pleas were rejected by Supreme Court. We are investigating the case as a murder case, but we don’t have enough evidence to prove it.”
