The accidental death of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) doctors’ cell chief Dr Dilip Ghule on Tuesday has again turned the spotlight on what is wrong with the Katraj-Swargate bus rapid transit system (BRTS) corridor. Ghule died after the autorickshaw in which he was travelling turned turtle near Bhapkar Petrol Pump on Pune-Satara Road around 6.30 am.

According to the police, the accident took place when a two-wheeler came in front of the rickshaw from the opposite side prompting the auto driver to apply sudden brakes and the auto turned turtle.

The reasons

Many stretches of BRTS lane have been blocked for construction work and poor traffic monitoring is causing hardships to commuters. The ongoing construction of Swargate flyover and an underpass on Pune-Satara road has narrowed space for traffic movement leading to bottleneck on the stretch.

Worst sufferers

Road crossing is a nightmare for residents of the area because of the chaotic traffic situation on the entire stretch of Swargate-Katraj BRTS route.

Traffic police byte

The city traffic police claim that the ongoing constructions have led to this situation. Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare told dna said, “We have put barricades at necessary places besides taking measures to check wrong side crossing, lane cutting etc.”

Worst-affected areas

1 Sai Temple: Work of underpass and Swargate flyover has choked traffic in the area
2 Volga Chowk: Motorists and drivers do not follow traffic signals leading to unnecessary traffic jams and accidents
3 Near Adinath Society: Vehicle users get stuck between the BRTS stretch as they take the wrong way
4  Near Bhapkar Petrol Pump:  Drivers cut lanes and take the wrong way as most of punctures in the BRTS stretch is open
