A standard IV student Samruddhi Pawar (10) died on Thursday morning after she collapsed in the school complaining chest pain. Samruddhi was a student of Modern Primary High School in Ganeshkhind Road, run by Progressive Education Society.

Samruddhi’s family members have alleged that the school authorities didn’t take immediate action after she fell unconscious in the classroom.

“Instead of rushing her to the hospital immediately, the school authorities merely informed the parents and waited for them to arrive. If she was promptly taken to the hospital, maybe she could have been saved,” said Samruddhi’s uncle Dashrath Shinde.

The girl, according to her father Tatya Pawar, was perfectly fine when she left for the school around 7 am.

“She had her breakfast like every day and went to the school. I was preparing to leave for the office when I got a call from the school asking me to rush to the school immediately as Samruddhi had taken ill,” he said.

As Pawar reached the school within 10 minutes, he found she was losing consciousness and rushed her to the nearby Kulkarni Hospital. The doctors started treating her but told him she was sinking and needs to be transferred to a bigger hospital.

Samruddhi was then taken to Ratna Hospital, but even the doctors there could not help her and wanted the parents to move her to yet another hospital. But looking at her deteriorating condition, they continued treating her. After a while, Samruddhi was declared dead.

“Doctors could not tell us what exactly happened to Samruddhi. Our family doctor told us that she had no prior medical history. The doctors from Aundh Hospital have preserved her viscera. We will know the exact cause of death after some time,” said Pawar.

Denying any negligence on the part of school staff, PES chairman Gajanan Ekbote said, “Samruddhi started getting uneasy after she had eaten something from her lunchbox. She started feeling giddy and complained of chest pain. Our principal and the class teachers immediately brought her down from the third floor of the school and tried to give her first aid and subsequently alerted her parents. They accompanied Samruddhi’s father when he was taking her to out of school. What has happened is unfortunate but our people tried their best to save the child.”

With the family demanding a case of negligence be registered against the school authorities, the police have decided to investigate the matter.  “We have registered a accidental death case and will record the statements of family and school authorities. We will wait for the post-mortem and viscera reports before taking a call,” said Chatuhshrungi police station senior inspector Ajay Kadam.
