Pune-based Assamese celebrate Lachit Divas

Chief guest Ghanashyam Nath, principal of Guwahati Commerce College spoke on the life and times of Lachit.

To commemorate the heroism of Assam warrior Lachit Bhorphukan, Assamese association of Pune organised a cultural programme on Saturday at New English school. Lachit, who is termed as Shivaji Maharaj of Assam, valiantly fought the battle of Saraighat against the Mughals who had invaded Assam.

Chief guest Ghanashyam Nath, principal of Guwahati Commerce College spoke on the life and times of Lachit. Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Pravin Togadia, Colonel Ranjit Talukdar and Students’ Experience in Inter-State Living National convener and northeast expert and Ashish Bhave attended the programme.

This is the first time that a programme to commemorate Lachit’s heroic deeds was organised outside Assam. A souvenir was also released on the occasion depicting the life and history of the state.
Suhrid Barua, committee member related the tale of the commander in Ahom kingdom, “During the last stage of the battle of Saraighat, Lachit, who was seriously ill, led a desperate battle forcing Mughals to retreat from Guwahati.”
