Alleging that former Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol's political contacts are shielding him and the local police is reluctant to take action against Pol in the planchette case, members of Maharashtra Andashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (MANS) threatened a statewide agitation.

A sting operation and media reports had alleged that Pol used planchette to get clues about the murder case of Dr Narendra Dabholkar by summoning two retired police constables who were self proclaimed Godmen.

Speaking to press on Saturday, members of MANS said that they will wait until a final deadline of July 31 for the Pune police to constitute an inquiry against Pol and two other former police officers.

"It's been nearly a month since the report on alleged planchette incident has been published and yet no serious action has been by government or the police department. The entire incident goes against my father's ideology and everything that he fought for. First we saw that the state government was not serious about the murder investigation and now we see that they are reluctant to probe Pol who is being shielded by certain politicians and police," said Hamid Dabholkar, son of slain rationalist thinker.

Avinash Patil, executive president of MANS said, "Our legal team is looking into it and we might even file a public interest litigation (PIL) in this regard. Initially, the police dilly dallied claiming there was no formal complaint. We then gave a formal complaint to anassistant commissioner of police in Pune and also with the Daund Police where the Godman (tantrik) is residing."

Milind Deshmukh, principal secretary, MANS said, "The police and the state home minister kept claiming that there wasn't any evidence with them. Later we met the journalist and have also seen the videos of the sting operation which shows former Police Commissioner Gulabrao Pol conceding that he took part in such a planchette. What more evidence do the police and the home ministry need? They should investigate and punish the cops as required by the law."

Meanwhile Pune police Commissioner Satish Mathur said, "MANS members had met joint commissioner of police in my absence. Their application has been forwarded to superior officers in Mumbai as the state government has initiated an independent committee to probe the planchette incident."
