Those violating traffic rules on Pune-Mumbai expressway will not be able to get away scot-free now as the CCTV installed at the expressway will not only capture the footage of the vehicle, but it also give the vehicle registration number to the highway police for action.
Fulora Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently developed a new software that is installed in CCTV cameras with the help of which the NGO members and highway police can monitor the real time activities on the expressway even on their mobile phones.
The police can also take snapshots of vehicles violating traffic rules. At present, the software is undergoing trials.
Tanmay Pendse (29), a businessman and director of Fulora’s project for safety on E-way, said, “The main purpose of the software is to monitor and click pictures of vehicles cutting the lane frequently. We are also getting a positive response from the highway officers.”
He added, “The system is connected to a server and the information will be sent to the toll booth and connected to a printer. The print will be handed over to the highway traffic police, who will then take action.”
The highway traffic police claim that the software will be helpful, though there are some flaws that need to be rectified. Superintendent of police (highway) Dilip Bhujbal said, “The system will be very useful for the highway traffic department. We have checked the software and asked the NGO to customise the software for better performance, but overall we are very happy with the system.”
Bhujbal said, “Once the software starts functioning properly, the increasing number of traffic violations and road accidents on the expressway will reduce and so many lives can be saved. It is essential that people should realise the importance of following the traffic rules.”
