A new system the Pune police have adopted for passport verification has added pace to the procedure of issuance of passports.

Earlier, the applications used to go from the special branch to the police stations concerned for verification, which would take a week’s time. After the verification, it would go to the Passport Seva Kendra, which took another three weeks.

Now, with the special branch starting an online system, the work of police verification is done much faster. The new system is saving the police seven to eight days of the passport verification process.

The city police department receives more than 80,000 applications for police verification every year. “In order to expedite the process of passport verification, we have introduced this online verification from this month. As all the police stations have internet connections, they can easily take the details of the applicants and get the verification done,” joint commissioner of police (law and order) Sanjeev Kumar Singhal, said.

All the police stations are provided with the user name and password, Singhal said, adding, “I will be review the new system soon as we want to get the work streamlined faster. This will help us expedite the process of verification.”

Earlier, the details of the applicants had to be sent to the police stations manually. This usually took more than seven days as every month the police would get more than 9,000 applications, Singhal said.

Getting passports renewed at the passport office had become a tedious process. The conerted efforts taken by RTI activist Vinita Deshmukh streamlined the functioning at the Passport Seva Kendra run by TCS in Mundhwa and the MEA’s Passport Office on Senapati Bapat Road.

However, the dna report on January 5 “Passport Mela: A painful experience for applicants” exposed the trouble faced by passport seekers who visited a Passport Mela held at Mundhwa. The report detailed on how many cases of online applications, online appointments and police verification were still pending.

After the report, the Nav Bharat Nagrik Manch started its Passport Cell to help passport seekers. Manch convener Vinita Deshmukh informed that the Cell will function from its office at Bhosale-Shinde Arcade near Deccan Gymkhana bus stop, JM Road.
