When deputy chief minister and guardian minister of Pune, Ajit Pawar visited the garbage processing plant at Uruli Devachi, it was expected that its poor functioning would disappoint him.

However, what infuriated him was an illicit liquor den functioning right inside the depot. In typical style, Pawar ordered the police officers to destroy the den on the spot. “Now do you want Ajit Pawar and RR Patil to come here and remove these dens?” asked an angry Pawar sarcastically.
The police officers and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials accompanying him had a tough time as they had to face the wrath of the guardian minister. PMC commissioner Mahesh Pathak, MLA Bapu Pathare and some Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporators from the PMC were also present.

One of the officials who accompanied Pawar during the inspection said, “While inspecting the processing plant, Pawar saw some smoke coming out from the area close to the compound wall of the depot. Later, he noticed an illicit liquor den and called the police.”

Pawar blasted the police officers and the staffers deployed at the depot and ordered them to destroy the den immediately. “How could the police fail to notice such a den inside the depot?” he reportedly said.

Later, Pawar held a meeting on the garbage issue at Council Hall, where he ordered the district collector to carry out a survey of an open plot in the fringe villages, which will be included in the PMC limits.

Speaking to the media, Pawar said, “Every year, 150 tonnes of garbage are generated from the city, but there aren’t enough processing plants. Though there are some open plots reserved on the outskirts in the development plan, these areas are yet to be included in the PMC limits.

The district collector has been asked to carry out a survey of the open plots around the city and submit the report by January 31.”
