Following the arrest of Swami Aseemanand in connection with his involvement in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast, several agencies from the state, including the State Intelligence Department, Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the special cells of police have started coordinating with central agencies and the police machinery of other states working in cases related to Hindu terror.

Confession of Aseemanand, whose real name is Naba Kumar Sarkar, a 59-year-old native of Hooghly district in West Bengal, has brought to light names of many senior RSS leaders’ involvement in the Malegaon and Samjhauta Express blasts.

Agencies like the ATS of Maharashtra Police investigating the Malegaon blasts, in which Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur is one of the key accused along with Lt Colonel Shrikant Purohit and few others, are further coordinating with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and special wings of police from states like Rajasthan, Gujarat and Karnataka and the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
The task of further cracking the complete module and network of the Hindu radicals is being worked out by agencies jointly. Officers feel this would help nail people involved in planning and carrying out such attacks.
Aseemanand’s confession regarding his involvement and involvement of many others in the three blast cases in which alleged Hindu fundamentalists are involved has revealed that the terror network is widespread across the country. It has brought to light that besides the involvement of senior alleged fundamentalists, there are also active sympathisers at the junior level who are part of the sleeper cells in small towns and cities across Maharashtra and in neighbouring states.
A senior Intelligence officer said, “Other than the involvement of alleged RSS leaders and sympathisers, names of a few other small groups working on Hindutva-based issues are likely to be involved with them. The investigations done by several central and state agencies have revealed that the attacks were planned not by just one group but were well coordinated and executed by many.
With Hindu terror raising its head in the country and intensifying operations, agencies across the country have started coordinating so that information regarding the suspects and the accused could be passed on and facilitate measures to tackle the menace and nab people involved.”
Investigation agencies had earlier arrested several persons belonging to the Muslim community in connection with the blasts. It was said that agencies had cracked the case but the confession of Aseemanand has now raised questions about working of these agencies.
