The students of the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies, who were booked by the police following a raid on a ‘Friendship Day’ party in Pune, have found supporters in the Shiv Sena.

The party raised the issue in parliament, highlighting the insensitivity with which the police paraded the students before the media as if they were some criminals.

On Thursday, Shiv Sena MP Bharatkumar Raut said, “Images of management students who were partying on the eve of Friendship Day being raided by the police should have been a discreet operation.” He also wondered how the media managed to reach the spot and install cameras even before the police.
“Shouldn’t the police have handled it more discreetly? If the students had violated the norms by not seeking permission for the party, the police were right in taking action. Nobody disputes that. If they committed crime by consuming liquor at the party without permission, that is understandable. But while taking the action they should have reckoned that it was not a rave party. Moreover, by parading the students it gave an impression as if they were criminals, which is highly insensitive,” Raut said.

The MP also sought the government’s intervention to ensure that such public display of students on cameras with the police permission should be dealt with firmly.

A senior cabinet minister and Congress MP said, “We have received complaints from various sections of people on the matter. We are going to bring it to the notice of chief minister Ashok Chavan to direct the state home department to show some sensitivity while tackling students’ matters.”

Another minister said that according to the law, you cannot stop students of 21 years of age and above from consuming alcohol. “The only violation was that the organiser of the party had not sought the permission. But that does not give the police right to parade them like criminals,” the minister said.
