Two housewives committed suicide in the city in last two days, one due to dowry harassment, the other owing to depression.

On Wednesday, a 22-year-old housewife, Manshi Waghmare, committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Goregaon (East) after she was allegedly harassed by her in-laws, who were demanding Rs5 lakh in dowry to buy Mhada flat. The Aarey police have arrested the in-laws, including the victim’s husband, and have charged them with abettment of suicide following a complaint registered by the woman’s parents.

According to police, the deceased, a resident of Junahill quarters, Adarsh Nagar, hanged herself from the ceiling fan when her husband and the in-laws were not at home. When her in-laws returned, they rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on admission.

Manshi was married to Manish Waghmare, 32, three years ago, when the in-laws had taken Rs50,000 in dowry. “The victim’s parents have alleged that after a year of Manshi’s marriage, the in-laws started demanding a vehicle. They were allegedly torturing her physically and mentally,” said senior police inspector LG Tonpe of Aarey police station.

In another incident, a 57-year-old housewife from Ghatkopar allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the sixth storey of her building on Thursday afternoon. The deceased, identified as Deepika Navinchandra Rupani, was rushed to the hospital by her neighbours. She was declared dead before admission.

According to the police, Rupani was suffering from stress and depression since past 10 years and was undergoing treatment. It is suspected that she took the step as her health problems had become unbearable.
