The Southern Command has claimed the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), in its land dispute with the army, has agreed to the terms laid down by it. However, RWITC members chose not to comment on the issue.

Brig MS Jaswal of Local Military Authority (LMA) and committee members of the RWITC had a meeting on Saturday over the land dispute. A press release issued by the Defence PRO, Southern Command, said the RWITC has unconditionally agreed to withdraw the writ petition filed by it in the Bombay high court last December.

It stated, “RWITC has agreed to abide by the original lease deed (1907) and various MoUs signed, they have also agreed to unconditionally withdraw the petition.”

However, when contacted, RWITC members were tight-lipped. “We cannot comment on the issue as of now. The final decision will be taken only after the committee meets with the chairman Vivek Jain in Mumbai on Sunday,” RWITC official BA Engineer told DNA.

The dispute between the army and the RWITC revolves around a lease deed which was agreed to in February 1907. While the RWITC maintains the area that measures 111.5 acres has been leased in perpetuity to the club, the army states that the area is 11.5 acres.

The dispute heightened over 65 acres of land in the club costing Rs1,000 crore that the army claims to be a general parade ground (GPG) and hence an A1 defence land. According to the army, the RWITC tried to grab the land by using forged documents.

“RWITC had petitioned the Bombay high court laying claim to 65 acres of A1 defence land using forged documents. Army, in turn, had taken necessary measures to protect its interest and land. Consequently, further affidavit had been filed by RWITC seeking interim relief. The matter was heard on March 20, wherein RWITC, being on weak footing, had requested the court time for amicable mutual settlement with LMA, Pune before the next hearing,” Defence PRO, Southern Command said.
