The Centre on Tuesday despatched teams of senior officials to coordinate with states in their efforts to contain the spread of swine flu even as four more people succumbed to the infection since Monday night, taking the national toll to 11.

Among the latest fatalities are a woman of 62 from Mumbra, Thane, a seven-year-old girl from Vadodara, Gujarat, and a 31-year-old man from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. A 13-year-old girl had died around 1.30 am on Tuesday in Pune.

The count of confirmed cases across the country rose to 1,078 as 119 tested positive on Tuesday, with Pune leading the count at 62.

Pune was followed by Mumbai, where 24 more tested positive and throat swabs of 448 were collected. Doctors had a tough time as around 4,000 rushed to 12 screening centres across the city. Fourteen fresh cases were isolated, in addition to 107 patients undergoing treatment in hospitals.

While the 62-year-old woman died at a private hospital at Byculla, health officials refused to term her death the second in Mumbai since she hailed from Mumbra.

Sayeeda Abdul Dorjiwala, a diabetic and ischemic heart disease patient, was admitted to Noor Hospital on August 6. Dr Jayaraj Thanekar, executive civic health officer, said Dorjiwala was immuno-suppressed. He said the hospital couldn’t be faulted for late diagnosis as it concentrated on other investigations because she showed no symptoms of swine flu.

Dorjiwala’s throat swabs were collected late on Saturday and she tested H1N1 positive on Monday. Thanekar said the virus was not the “primary cause” of death but could be one of the causes. Doctors and nurses treating Dorjiwala have been administered Tamiflu as a precautionary measure, he said.

In Vadodara, a seven-year-old girl died of the virus early on Tuesday, taking the toll in Gujarat to two.

“The girl had been under ventilation in the hospital for the past two days after being brought for treatment on August 7,” said health minister Jaynarayan Vyas, adding that she was a resident of Vadodara and had not travelled abroad.

Kerala reported its first swine flu fatality on Tuesday night. Wilson Lukose, 31, died at a private hospital at Thiruvananthapuram. Lukose, who had returned from the US via Chennai, was hospitalised five days ago and his condition worsened on Monday, officials said.

Shruti Gavde, 13, became Pune’s fifth H1N1 victim. The girl, who tested positive last Saturday, died in the city’s Sassoon Hospital around 1.30 am on Tuesday.
