A heated argument between a couple in Malabar Hill went horribly wrong on Wednesday after the housewife set herself ablaze. Her husband and three children, who reportedly tried to help her, also sustained burn injuries. The woman is critical and admitted to Nair Hospital, police said.

According to the Malabar Hill police, Gauru Sayyed, 40, a resident of Shimla Nagar slum near Hyderabad Estate in Malabar Hill, got into an argument with his wife Noorjehan, 35, at around 1.15am, following which she set herself on fire.

Sayyed and three of his four children — Mehejabeen, 11, Mehroon, 9 and Mehtaab, 8 — who tried to save Noorjehan, were alsoinjured in the fire. The police, alerted by the neighbours, rushed the injured family to Nair Hospital.

“We are still investigating the exact cause that resulted in this tragic incident,” said police inspector Ashok Dabhade.

Incidentally, even 12 hours after the incident, senior police inspector Vinay Bagade of Malabar Hill police station was unaware of this incident in his jurisdiction.
