About three months ago, Samir Gulmohammed Sangdhi, a resident of Bandra (W), was surfing the Internet for an overseas job. He came across an advertisement by the Andheri-based Ninoska Services. He emailed his resume to the placement firm, and got an interview call. He was interviewed by Viney Dominic Cardoz, CEO of the firm, and two “foreign recruiters” at a city five star hotel.

Within days, Cardoz called him back, saying that the job of a deputy manager of a five star hotel, either in the US, Canada or Australia, would be his if he shelled out Rs1.5 lakh as expenses for formalities. An eager Samir handed the money over to Cardoz, but then the trail went blank. Unable to contact Cardoz for more than a month, Samir went to the company office on New Link Road, Andheri (west), and found it closed.

Praveen Krishna Butan, a Delhi guy staying in Andheri, found Ninoska’s advertisement in a newspaper. “I first saw it in December. I sent my bio-data to the company’s email address,” he told DNA.

“Soon, I met Cardoz and his associates for an interview at a  five star hotel. He even arranged for my medical tests. Later, he told me that I would get the job of a cashier at a five-star hotel in Canada if I shell out Rs1.5 lakh. I paid up, but was not given any appointment letter. I asked Cardoz about it, but he was evasive. Smelling a rat, I visited the company’s office in July, and found it locked. I contacted the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police and lodged a complaint against the firm.”

Like Samir and Praveen, many others aspiring for foreign jobs were duped by Cardoz and Co. The EOW said that it received complaints from at least 70 more people, most of whom claimed to have paid between Rs3 lakh and Rs6 lakh to the firm for jobs they never got. The cops feel that there could be many more similarly duped by Cardoz.

“We will be putting up a notice at Ninoska’s office, urging all others who have been cheated to contact us,” said Kishore Gajbiye, senior inspector of the EOW. “Cardoz was running a nationwide racket and might have duped hundreds of people of crores of rupees. We are making every possible effort to nab him.”
