Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar has undergone an hour-long surgery at Breach Candy Hospital on Wednesday to remove a mouth infection. Doctors said Pawar was doing fine and he would be shifted out of the intensive care unit (ICU) on Thursday.
According to Dr Sultan Pradhan, who operated upon the minister, Pawar was suffering from Osteoradionecrosis (ORN), a condition developed in patients treated for oral cancer through the radiation therapy. “There was no cancer but only infection which we had to remove,” said Sultan, adding that Pawar’s condition was good.
Pawar who was operated for his oral cancer in 2004 was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday. “He will be discharged in a couple of days,” said Pradhan.
