A major tragedy was averted on Paud Road after an autorickshaw caught fire near Jai Bhavani Petrol Pump on Thursday.
Gajanan Patrudkar, station duty officer of Kothrud Fire station, told DNA, “Soon after we got the call, we rushed to the spot and found the autorickshaw (MH-12-CH-9233) burning. We brought the fire under control within 10 minutes.”
Patrudkar said that the autorickshaw driver, Raju Popatrao Magar, had gone to the petrol pump to fill fuel in the vehicle. Since a petrol tanker was filling underground tanks at the station, Magar was asked to restart his vehicle a little away from the spot.
However, when Magar tried to start his autorickshaw, the evaporated petrol caught a spark due to the friction and the autorickshaw caught fire.
“Before we reached the spot, the petrol pump attendant tried to douse the fire with the help of a fire extinguisher, but he could not, as the plywood in the vehicle had caught fire.”
The Kothrud police said 6,000 litres of petrol were stored at the petrol pump on Paud Road at the time of the incident.
