In a first, a city businessman’s high-end Skoda Fabia stolen from Mumbai has been traced to about 1400-km away in Delhi, thanks to the etching on the vehicle’s windshield.

In fact, it were the laser-etched details on the car’s windshield using which the Delhi police tracked down the car’s owner, a Western India Automobile Association (WIAA) member who had filed a missing vehicle complaint.

Confirming that “the car belonged to our members”, WIAA executive chairman Nitin Dossa said, “The Delhi police got in touch with our helpline seeking details of the vehicle’s ownership after they found the car’s numbers etched on the windshields. We then alerted the vehicle owner of the development. The laser etching done by us helped the entire process.’’

“Laser-etching on glass is like a watermark. It is a fool-proof and tamper-proof method where the letterings cannot be erased unless the windshield is damaged or burnt. The etching contains the registration number and the WIAA helpline number,’’ added Dossa.

Laser-cutting of stencils is a one-time process and done within 15 minutes and is easily visible to cross check with registration plate. “For etching, we develop stencils with special laser processes during which the stencil is placed on the windshield,’’ added Dossa.

A stencil liquid solution is then applied and allowed to be for 90 seconds,  when the letters get etched just 0.001 mm into the glass. During the process, all the six glasses are etched so that it is easier to locate the owner’s identity.

As per Mumbai police records, on an average three to four vehicles, including two wheelers, go missing in the city daily.
