To accommodate the growing rush of patients at PD Hinduja Hospital in Mahim, its management will open a multi-specialty hospital on SV Road in Khar (West) by April. But the project has given the local residents a severe cold, as they fear the
12-storeyed building will worsen their living conditions.

Like the hospital in Mahim, this 100-bed facility, known as a boutique hospital, will service the upscale residents in Western suburbs, the residents claim. They complain that the new hospital will add an additional burden to the already faltering infrastructure. “On what basis did the BMC sanction their plans?” questioned Ranjit Warrier, a Khar (West) resident. “We are worried about increased levels of pollution, traffic congestion, and worsened water and sewage conditions. Where will the bio-medical waste be dumped? The civic body has okayed an unplanned infrastructure.”

A BMC official from the building proposal department said, “As per the approved plan and sanction, a nursing home will come up at the site. The hospital has its own parking lot near the site, which the BMC commissioner has already approved. According to BMC laws, nursing homes, polyclinics, maternity homes and medical practitioners can be allowed to operate in independent buildings.”
But the residents are not amused. “We don’t want a hospital in our narrow by-lane,” said Deepak Jain, another resident. “It will make living here impossible. The market rates of our properties will plummet as no one wants to see dead bodies and patients.”

The issue has been taken up by the 33rd Road ALM, which has questioned the role of the development plan (DP) department in sanctioning the hospital plan. Local corporator Ashish Shelar has assured the locals that he will take the battle to the authorities. “I’ll call a meeting with the chief engineer from the DP department.”
Pramod Lele, chief executive, PD Hinduja Hospital, said, “We have permission to provide mechanised parking facility on a land owned by us behind the hospital. Patients and relatives will park their vehicles at that site.”
