A seventy-year-old psychiatrist from Bombay Hospital was found dead in her Colaba apartment on Saturday morning. Ramola Kakkar was found by her maid lying in a pool of blood. The Colaba police have registered a case of accidental death, but the matter is still under investigation as the post-mortem report has indicated a case of unnatural death.

Kakkar lived alone on the seventh floor of Pushpa Vihar Building near the Colaba Post Office. Her husband Dr Vishnu Kakkar practises in Pune, her son lives abroad and her daughter lives in Lucknow. The entire family is in the medical profession.

Following the evidence of the post-mortem report, the police have said they will be investigating the matter thoroughly to determine if there is anything suspicious in the circumstances of Kakkar’s death.

According to the police, Kakkar’s maid rang the doorbell at 8.30am on Saturday but got no response. She then approached the liftman, who had duplicate keys to the house. “When she opened the main door with the duplicate keys, she found Kakkar lying on the floor with blood spread around her head,” said assistant police inspector Ram Abhang Rao. The maid raised the alarm, following which the society members informed the police at around 9am, said the officer.

According to the prima facie evidence, it appears that Kakkar slipped and hit her head on the iron frame of a decorative showpiece found lying near her body.

“She has a deep wound on the right side of her forehead due to which a lot of bleeding took place. It looks like a case of accidental death,” said Rao. A pool of urine was also found around her body when the authorities reached the spot, said a police officer. The last rites of the deceased will be performed on Sunday by her family, after which the police will take their statements to determine why Kakkar was living alone.

Strangely, the police found Kakkar’s house to be in complete disarray. “The flat was in a very bad state and had not been cleaned for months. According to the statement given by Kakkar’s maid, she only used to clean the kitchen and the rest of the house had been in the same condition for the last two years. There were thick layers of dust on the cupboards,” said a police officer from the Colaba police station.

Kakkar was also having trouble with some of her building residents on the ongoing renovation in her building. “Kakkar, who was also the secretary of the building society, had complained to the Colaba police that some of the residents were doing illegal constructions,” said a police officer. The police will now be investigating the nature of these disputes more thoroughly.

Another strange fact that has come to light, says Rao, is the maid’s report that Kakkar used to exercise using a small portable staircase (of the kind used during painting).

“Kakkar had been working with Bombay Hospital for the last 20 years and was one of the leading doctors there, with many VIP patients,” said Dr Ashish Tiwari, PRO of Bombay Hospital.
