More flights cancelled because of Hurricane Sandy

Several more flights to the US were cancelled on Tuesday, continuing to affect air passengers from the city and across the country.

Tuesday’s cancellation were among the 5,500-odd flights that were cancelled because of superstorm Sandy, along the US East Coast.

Around 7,000 flights had been cancelled on Monday.

India’s private carrier Jet Airways cancelled two flights on Tuesday while two other flights scheduled to operate on Wednesday is also cancelled. The cancelled flights are Brussels-Newark, Newark-Brussels for Tuesday and Brussels-Newark, Newark-Brussels for Wednesday.

A couple of other flights for the same destination on Thursday are also expected to be affected due the superstorm.

The national carrier which had Mumbai-Newark and New Delhi-New York scheduled on Tuesday, after delaying it inordinately, finally cancelled it later during the day.

“We are keeping an eye on the situation in US and the future flight operations there will depend on the weather conditions,” said an Air India official.

“ All arrangements are being made to help the affected passengers change their date of journey or if they want a refund, they can,” said another official.

Foreign airlines like United Airlines, British Airways too cancelled flights.

Though the storm is expected to subside by Wednesday, airlines are asking passengers to leave for airport only after checking with them.

According to reports, around six million people have been affected due to power cut in the affected parts of the US.

The local authorities have claimed that Sandy is the worst storm to hit the US in the past several decades.
