South Mumbai MP Milind Deora has urged the Centre to fund the proposed desalination plant in Mumbai. In a letter written to prime minister Manmohan Singh, Deora has said that measures taken by the civic authority are not proving to be enough and more is needed to be done for providing new sources of water.

Urging the prime minister to come forward with funds, the letter said: “Imposition of 15% cut in water supplied to residential areas and 30% cut for bulk consumers have failed to provide the anticipated respite. As against an average demand of 3,400 MLD per day, the local administration is able to supply only 2,900 MLD.
The BMC has set up plants for recycling of waste water at four locations and is serious about setting up a desalination plant for converting sea water into potable water.”

The parliamentarian has drawn attention towards a desalination project in Chennai for which the Centre has given an approval in
principle for releasing a grant of Rs871 crore.

“Mumbai being a highly populous city surely deserves a better deal from the Central government,” concludes the letter.
