It seems that the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) officials are not keen on learning from their past mistakes.

Even as their officials and a medical officer claimed a few days ago that there is no alarming situation regarding the health of their staff, a 55-year-old driver from Swargate ST depot lost his life due to a cardiac arrest while he was driving a Pune- Borivli on Saturday night in Mumbai.

Chandrakant Ghodke started from Swargate bus depot at 5pm and reached SumanNagar junction near Chembur around 9pm on Saturday. But just as he reached Chembur, Ghodke collapsed on the wheel, and the bus lost balance and was about to topple, but it struck passing garbage van, rammed into the divider and came to a halt. Thankfully, none of the passengers were hurt.

Ghodke had undergone a medical check-up carried out by the MSRTC officials for its entire staff in the state. Incidentally, Ghodke was attached to the Swargate depot where another MSRTC driver, Santosh Mane, was also working. Mane had recklessly driven the bus on the streets of Pune killing eight people on January 25.
Mane’s incident had prompted the MSRTC officials to carry out medical tests of all the bus
drivers in the state.

Medical check-up of the entire staff of Swargate and Shivajinagar ST depots was completed a few days ago.

Senior depot manager, Vijay Divate said, “After Bodake’s death, we immediately checked his medical reports. Everything was normal. He did not have any past medical history. His death is a shock to us.”

A few days back, honorary medical officer, Dr Anita Joshi, had told DNA that the medical reports of the staff from Swargate and Shivajinagar ST depots is not alarming.

When Dr Joshi was asked about the death of Bodake after he had recently undergone the medical check up, she said, “His reports were normal. It is an isolated case of sudden cardiac arrest.

However, we have taken a cognisance of his death and we are taking the follow-up of the medical reports of the staff. I have even advised the MSRTC officials to take precautionary action and send those employees on medical leave who are suffering from any illness.”
