Usually once a couple and their respective families have agreed to ‘The Big Fat Indian wedding’ of the current times, the next important step is to decide on the ideal marriage date.

But what plays a major deciding factor in a Hindu marriage is the muhurat, the date which is usually selected after matching horoscopes and matching the planetary movements.

With all the relatives and friends curious to know the wedding date, families usually decide on a tentative plan keeping in mind the religious sentiments and availability of the bride and grooms and their near and dear ones.

Lohegaon-based Pandit Hari Narayan Pandey, who is mostly engaged in weddings during this season, affirms that there is no wedding muhurat from April 28 to May 28 this year.

“Because of the inauspicious planetary movements (Guru Shukra ast) between this period, the auspicious days are less this year. After May 28, the auspicious days for wedding will begin after June 15,” he adds.

If you are planning your wedding this period, it is better to consult a pandit or astrologer before finalising the D-day.

Astrologer Kantilal Munot says that if planets concerned are weak, afflicted or combust, they fail to deliver marriage during that particular dashas. Similarly, if houses concerned and their lords are weak, marriage is mostly denied.

“When any planet comes in conjunction with the Sun, its power gets lessened. This year the Sun and Jupiter are coming in the same house in May which diminishes the power of Jupiter which is ideal for marriage. After April 28, the wedding season begins from June 15,” Munot said.

This downfall is not only affecting the pandits but also the catering business. The wedding venues are keeping themselves busy with other get-togethers and birthday parties. “This year the auspicious days are very less as compared to last year. After April 13 to 15, the shubh muhurat is in June. There are no auspicious days in the month of May, so apparently we have fewer bookings this year, especially for weddings,” say Asad of Shahji caterers in the city.
