A purported fallout in business with his younger brother may have led Miten Mehta, 54, son of the CEO and trustee of the Bandra-based Lilavati hospital Vijay Mehta to commit suicide, according to the police.
On Tuesday, at around 8.30 pm, Miten, a non resident Indian (NRI), who was in India to visit his parents, jumped to his death from his parents’ ninth floor apartment at the 13-storeyed Maker Towers ‘L’ Wing apartment. Miten ran a diamond business in Belgium along with his younger brother Niket Mehta.
“Susheela, Miten’s mother was at home when he leaped off from the balcony,” said police inspector GN Kawade of Cuffe Parade police station. The body was sent to GT Hospital for post mortem, which stated head injuries as the cause of death. “Miten’s body was found lying on the parapet of the first floor of the building. It was spotted by the watchman from the second floor who heard a loud thud seconds after Miten jumped,” added Kawade.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that Miten was scheduled to return to Belgium on Tuesday night. At around 7.30 pm, Miten took his luggage to the ground floor, but suddenly changed plans and returned home. He spoke to his mother for a while and then she went to the prayer room. “Soon after, he locked himself up in the bedroom and jumped from the window,” said police inspector Vilas Bhole.
According to the servant who works with the Mehta family, Miten looked tense for the last few days. “Miten had come to Mumbai a week ago. It has come to light that his father had gone to Belgium a fortnight ago to sort out some alleged family problem,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.
