Skeletons are tumbling out of the closet following the arrest of former encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma and five others in the Lakhan Bhaiya fake encounter case.

It has come to fore that an inquiry report submitted by the crime branch of the Mumbai Police last year to former police commissioner Hasan Gafoor mentioned that a lawyer had threatened RA Shaikh, the railway metropolitan magistrate. The Bombay high court had asked Shaikh to investigate the encounter.

The lawyer had threatened her at the behest of a police officer who was involved in the encounter. The magistrate had complained to the Bombay high court in March last year against the lawyer.

“The commissioner had asked the crime branch to investigate the matter,” an officer from the crime branch said. “Investigations showed that Shaikh had been threatened. We gave our report to the commissioner after a few months with a recommendation that an FIR should be registered.”

The development gains significance because Shaikh was hearing the encounter case of Ramnarayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya.

Officers of the DN Nagar police station gunned down Gupta,
believed to be a Chhota Rajan aide, on November 11, 2006, near the Nana Nani Park in Versova. The lawyer who threatened Shaikh represented one of the officers.

Gupta’s family had alleged that the police had picked him up from Vashi and later shot him dead in Versova. Gupta’s brother Ramprasad had filed a petition in the high court, demanding a judicial inquiry.

In July 2008, Shaikh submitted a confidential report about her findings to the high court. Circumstantial evidence suggested that the police had abducted Gupta and killed him in custody, Shaikh said in her report.

“I don’t want to say anything about that case,” Gafoor said. “You find it out for yourself.”
