Khan, who worked at the Designer cake shop, was a witness in the murder case of Deepak Gupta, the brother of the co-accused in the Shah case, Sohanlal Gupta.

According to the police officials involved in the investigation of Gupta’s murder, Khan reportedly presented himself at Dindoshi Sessions court on April 5, where he was asked to present as a witness in the case. On April 6, Sameer along with Sandeep Waruse, kidnapped the five-year-old Shah with the intention of making the family cough up ransom.

As per police records, Gupta was found murdered on the terrace of a plush building in Malad around a year ago. He had been missing overnight then. Gupta died after being strangulated with cable wires, and his face was disfigured with the help of stones. Vijay Rajput, a 19-year-old man was held by police for the murder and the case is presently being heard at Dindoshi Sessions court. “At that time, no one realised that Sameer had a crime on his mind” said a source.

Police officials from Kandivli police station claim that Khan and Waruse frequented Karnit’s building over two weeks to befriend the child before kidnapping him. Locals who noticed them in the area provided the description to the police. Accordingly, a sketch was prepared and circulated across the city. Sameer was identified as Sunny.
