The last-minute extension of the deadline for junior college online admissions was a saving grace to nearly 700 students, who submitted their option forms on Friday morning.

The education department extended the deadline by a day to help students who had not filled in their forms correctly.  Despite the additional time however, a considerable number of students were still unable to complete filling their forms.

A majority of such students belonged to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) board which had sent mark sheets by post, resulting in many not receiving them in time. This was the first time the NIOS made a decision to send students their mark sheets by post, instead of sending them to the schools for distribution.

Amol Wagle, a 17-year-old student of NIOS from Santa Cruz, missed submitting his form by a whisker. He did not receive his mark sheet until noon on Friday, even though his results were announced last month. “I waited for days for my marksheets to arrive.  But my application was pending as I did not have my original mark sheets in hand. Luckily, the postman delivered the mark sheet to me at noon and I rushed to the nearest guidance centre to submit my form,” he said.

Vilas Kamble, guidance centre in-charge at Vidyanidhi Junior College, Juhu, said Wagle reached there by 12.30 and the officers helped him fill his form. His forms pending status was also cleared. But by the time he could submit his application form, it was 1pm and the website closed.

Like Wagle, several others were stranded as they received their mark sheets late. "I could not believe my bad luck. The board should have informed us or sent us the mark sheets earlier. I will try to get admission offline now," he said.
