A special lecture by the former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), Anil Kakodkar, on nuclear energy has been organised for MLAs and MLCs of the state on Monday as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the state legislature.

The lecture has gained importance on the background of the controversy over Jaitapur nuclear power plant near
Ratnagiri in Konkan.

The public sector Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has proposed to implement the 9,900 MW power generating complex in phases in Ratnagiri district. Chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan, who visited the proposed Jaitapur nuclear project site in February end, witnessed stiff resistance from local people. Hence, a lecture by eminent nuclear scientist Kakodkar has been organised for members of state legislature.

State parliamentary affairs minister, Harshawardhan Patil, in a press conference confirmed that the lecture will be held on Monday morning, but he clarified that it was organised as part of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the state legislature.

He said Kakodkar’s lecture will begin at 10 am. Members of both legislative assembly and legislative council have been invited. He said the three-week budget session of the state legislature would start on March 14. The state budget will be presented on March 23.
Patil said 16 legislative bills would be taken up for consideration during the session. These bills include one about regulating fees of private schools and another about eradicating superstition.

He said opposition parties are invited for a tea party organised on Sunday on the eve of budget session.
