The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has warned the police of a possible “sensational” terror strike in the city either by the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) or the underworld during the state assembly elections.

The alert says the LeT is planning “something sensational” like targeting top politicians, a senior intelligence officer from Delhi told DNA on condition of anonymity.

The IB has also warned that the underworld network led by Dawood Ibrahim will also be active during the polls, working for or against some candidates, the officer said. The warning is “very specific” to the assembly elections scheduled for October 13, he said.
“Top politicians from Delhi are expected to travel to Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, which is a cause of concern for security agencies,” the officer said.

And that the elections coincide with the festival season has added to the worries of security agencies.

Besides holding public rallies and road shows, politicians also plan to meet people on trains and at malls and shopping centres, the officer said, adding that such situations could be exploited by terrorists.

He said intelligence agencies have stared “mobilising informers”, besides carrying out mock security drills at malls and on local trains in collaboration with the police.
