Come Friday, all newlywed couples can register their marriages in their respective municipal ward offices. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start marriage registration at all of its 24 ward offices from March 5.
The deputy inspector general of registration and stamps has already stopped registering marriages from March 1. As per a state government directive, the responsibility of issuing marriage certificates is now with the BMC. The BMC, however, was in no position to immediately take charge due to lack of trained staff. But as the deputy inspector general of registration has stopped the process, the BMC will now train their health department staff to register marriages.
