Curiosity is the mother of invention. This saying was proved true when late Jayantrao Tilak founded the Rose Society of Pune in 1962.

Back then, good quality roses and rose plants were a rare thing in the city. Sensing this, Tilak founded the Rose Society with the sole objective of popularising and inculcating love for roses among Puneites.

Former general secretary of the Rose Society of India, Arun Patil, said, “Tilak was also the first president of the club. However, one of the founder members, late Nanasaheb Joshi, invented the polybag method of rose propagation. For this effort, he was felicitated by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture. This proved to be revolutionary in handling and transportation of rose.” In addition, this method generated employment and many rose lovers have successfully started their own nurseries.

“To popularise cultivation of roses, the society also undertakes hybridisation, publishes books in Marathi on the subject and organises rose shows. The society also conducts regular meetings, lectures by experts, slide shows and visits to nurseries to enhance rose culture among members,” Patil said.

There are over one thousand members who have joined the society and meet every third Saturday of the month at Tilak Samarak Mandir from 6 pm to 7 pm.

The society also holds exhibitions in monsoons and winters to help understand the latest varieties and updates in the world of roses.

“The society is proud about the production of millions of roses in nurseries in and around the city. This has not only encouraged people to grow roses but it has also generated employment as Pune exports roses to other states,” he said.
