With chief minister Prithviraj Chavan positive about the redevelopment of sector five of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) by the Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority (Mhada), the agency is all set to kick off work on May 1, 2011.

The decision is expected to be taken by the housing department in next few weeks.

Officials made a presentation to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday at the Sahyadri guest house. The CM was told by the officials about the opposition by the local politicians for the development by the government agency.

Mhada has been offering the tenements of 269 sq ft against the tenements of 300 sq ft offered by the private developers that were part of the bidding process followed by the government in last two years. The local public representatives have been demanding bigger tenements than what is being offered.

Chavan told officials to make a presentation before the politicians representing the area including MP Eknath Gaikwad and State minister Varsha Gaikwad.

Satish Gavai, vice president, Mhada, said, “Sector five is spread over 63 hectares, of which developable area is 23 hectare and only 13 hectare can be used for construction. Nearly 9,000 families have to be rehabilitated. With the largest sector among all, I am confident that it could be developed on par with the quality of private developers.”

Minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir said that sector five was convenient to the Mhada for the redevelopment as it comprises of Mhada colonies and transit camp. “If Mhada succeeds in the development of the sector, the government may think of handing over the responsibility of the redevelopment of other sectors too,” he said.

Rs 10,000 crore was chalked out by the government a few years ago and has seven bidders were short listed for the redevelopment of five sectors of the project.
