Cops trace 571 absconders in Mumbai

At the last count done by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) there were around 14,000 accused absconding in the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

In a special drive carried out by the state police over the last three months which is still ongoing to trace out absconding and missing people which is pegged to about 20,000 people in the state, has lead some results. The police could trace 571 people who were shown as absconding in Mumbai alone while for the rest of Maharashtra it is 911 which the police have able to re-arrest.

At the last count done by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) there were around 14,000 accused absconding in the Mumbai Police Commissionerate. The CID had formed special teams to trace the absconding accused and so have special cells been formed at all police station levels to find the absconding people. “During the special drive the police has traced out quiet a few accused. It was also found that 108 people have died and thus the toll will be reduced further. Moreover, the drive is on till June 30, we are thus hopeful that more accused would be tracked down,” said Ajey Gadkari, additional government pleader.

The division bench of justice AM Khanwilkar and justice RY Ganoo, were informed that the state government as per directions of the union government are working towards introducing a system Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) which will link all police stations in the state to each other, through which data of all absconding accused would be shared internally easily. This data will also be available nationally helping in finding the accused. However, the process is at a very initial level the court was informed.

As per the high court suggestions and decision of the high power committee special cells have been set up at each police stations. Officers in these special cells concentrate only on tracing absconding accused/ convicts. These officers are directly supervised by the deputy commissioner of police, in metropolitan areas and superintendent of police level officers in rural areas.
