Although the Congress high command had indicated willingness for a post-poll alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), deputy chief minister and NCP leader Ajit Pawar seemed to rule out the idea completely.

He was talking to the media in the city on Tuesday. When asked about chief minister Prithviraj Chavan’s indication of post-poll alliance with the NCP, Pawar said, “That is their thought, but we are confident about our victory and we will have a clear mandate in the civic poll.”

About the mudslinging match between him and his detractors, he said, “The issues during election campaign should be based on development and not on personal criticism, but all political parties failed to do so, except the NCP that only speaks about development of Pune.”

“The opposition parties and the Congress did not get any good issue to criticise the NCP and me, so they are making personal attacks on me,” Pawar said.

When asked about Pune MP Suresh Kalmadi’s role in the elections, Pawar ridiculed him as a jail minister and said, “He lost the pride of Pune, but managed to gain a ticket for his supporters so the people should think whom they going to vote. Moreover the city Congress does not have a firm leadership.”

He ruled out executing the water transport project included in the Congress manifesto. “Water transport on rivers in the city is not viable as we cannot manage the water level throughout the year,” he added.

He said, “Every year we will buy 500 buses and purchase 2,500 buses immediately after coming to power.”

Baramati MP Supriya Sule said, “Within five years we will make all the wards garbage-free and the work in this regard has already started.”
