For millions of motorists, a snail-paced drive through Vile Parle and Andheri junctions of SV Road is a daily traumatic experience.

However, there may be some relief in the offing, as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Corporation (MMRDA) has declared that it will partially open the Barfiwala junction flyover towards the northern side by June this year.

The two-lane 190metre long arm will lead vehicles — more than 70,000 per day as per the authority’s records — to the Juhu lane without any traffic signals up to Tipu Sultan Chowk straight from Gokhale Bridge. “There were many hurdles that we needed to overcome, such as the shifting of underground utilities, acquisition of private lands, toilet blocks and a Palika Bazar.

The resettlement and rehabilitation of a few structures was also imminent and equally important. However, we were able to prevail over the difficulties and are looking forward to a positive conclusion. The flyover is expected to save a lot of time and fuel for vehicle owners,” said additional metropolitan commissioner Ashwini Bhide.

The MMRDA has resettled and rehabilitated 13 commercial structures under the North arm of the flyover and five in Oshiwara district, out of the total 35 project-affected structures. In all, 17 structures were found to be ineligible. The expenditure for the Barfiwala flyover is approximately Rs42.5 crore.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited flyover on one of the busiest junctions in the city at Suman Nagar is likely to be completed by July, bringing huge respite to motorists entering the city from the Eastern Express Highway. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has claimed that 75% work for the flyover is already completed.

The 500m-long Suman Nagar flyover, which is being built at a cost of Rs25 crore, is one of the eleven flyovers planned by the MMRDA. The flyovers at Thakur Complex, Dindoshi, the domestic airport, Malad junction, Navghar junction, Hindmata and Sion Hospital have already been thrown open to traffic.

The flyover at King’s Circle, Tulpule Chowk has also been partially opened and is expected to be fully opened for traffic by May. “The flyover at Lalbaug (length of 2,400m and costing Rs147 crore) is also heading towards May completion,” said Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA spokesperson, in a written statement issued a few days ago by the authority.
