The city crime branch sleuths on Monday arrested three persons for allegedly kidnapping a one-and-a-half-year-old girl from Sakinaka last month and selling it to a childless couple in Kolhapur.

The police, while taking custody of the girl, claimed that the couple was unaware that the infant was stolen from the city.

The arrested people are Akhilesh Nishad, Satyavan Raut and Jagdish Verma. Their accomplice Deepak Yadav is still at large. The police said that complainant Mohammad Raes Khan’s daughter Farzana was asleep with her mother in their Sakinaka home on February 2, when the incident took place.

When the mother woke up, she found Farzana missing. The couple then filed a missing complaint with the Sakinaka police.

On receiving specific information about their alleged involvement in the kidnapping, the trio was picked up by unit 4 of the crime branch. They confessed to having kidnapped Farzana and selling her to the Kolhapur couple.

“Childless for two years of marriage, the couple were looking to adopt a child. They  had been visiting orphanages and NGO offices for the same. In the meantime, they also got in touch with Raut, who assured them of getting a child for adoption, of course for a sum,” said a crime branch officer requesting anonymity.

“Raut along with the others kidnapped Farzana and handed her over to the couple. After taking the money, they promised to return soon with the adoption documents, but never did,” the officer added.

On the basis of the information provided by the trio, a police team went to Kolhapur to take custody of Farzana and reunited her with her parents. “The couple was unaware that the girl given to them was stolen. We suspect that the arrested persons could be involved in a child abduction and selling racket, which we are probing,” the officer said.
