You can get into the police force, but you'll have to try really hard to get out. It has taken a constable 20 years of misdemeanour, which includes insulting his superiors, arriving late to work and sometimes drunk, but he is yet to face the axe. Last week, he even misfired his gun in an inebriated state inside the police station, but got only as far as a suspension.

The man in question, police constable Nilesh Patil, 40, joined the Mumbai railway police in 1991, and has since been reprimanded 38 times, averaging one every six months, for various breaches. Since these were not of serious nature, he managed to get away with light punishment each time. In fact, he was promoted to the rank of head constable in 2007.

But his penchant for being drunk on duty led to him being reverted to the rank of police naik in 2009, said senior police inspector Bharat Kumar Rane of Mumbai Central railway police station.
Undeterred by the demotion, Patil pulled off another red tick on his report card on April 10, when he returned to Mumbai Central railway police station from train patrolling duty at around 12.35am.

He was carrying a .303 rifle, and as per the norms, its bullets should have been kept in a magazine and not in the gun’s chamber. But Patil's weapon was loaded, and he accidentally fired a round.

Fortunately, the bullet hit the floor and no one was injured. Patil's service rifle was seized and sent for forensic examination, while he was taken to JJ hospital for medical examination, which showed he had consumed alcohol.

Unable to overlook his consistent efforts this time around, his superiors suspended him pending an enquiry. He now earns half of his salary to do nothing.
