While addressing a group of press members, activists, and lawyers at a city based-hotel on Tuesday, former commissioner of New York City Department of Transportation, Janette Sadik Khan expressed concerns over the alarming number of pedestrian deaths in the country. According to Khan, more than 1.2 million people across the world die in road accidents every year and India accounts for 2 lakh of these deaths.

Speaking on the need for proper implementation of the Global Street Design Guide (GSDG) to reclaims city streets and junctions, Khan said, "We need to work with cities to design and implement projects that demonstrate the 'possible'. Secondly, we need to train professionals, agency staffs and academics for capacity building and to transform the streets in a better manner. Also, a proper strategy is required as a well-planned roadmap will help to complete the project at a low cost and within the stipulated time frame. We need to keep pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, business owners, children, vendors and disabled people on the loop to review if they can avail benefits of the changes.

While giving a comparative analysis of transportation management systems in New York and the city, Khan said that a wide range of options for transport, speed management, proper vigilance over traffic condition and adoption of better infrastructure are things that matter.

"Not just New York but also some Nordic, European and Scandinavian countries have evolved in terms of pedestrianisation and this in fact, has resolved many civic issues which the cities faced at large. The scope for Mumbai to take a positive step in this direction is huge and it can evolve soon if steps are taken properly. We are thankful to the municipal corporation and the city traffic police for extending a helping hand," Khan added.

Addressing the event, Additional Municipal Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), Vijay Singhal said, "The change we see in New York and Mumbai gives us an insight about how well we can pool the resources properly and give a proper solution to the traffic and street related problems of the city. The agencies shall also focus on capacity building and training where engineers and other officers of the MCGM shall be trained for street designing and transformation. We are ready to work in a joint collaboration and we believe that the efforts pumped in shall bore productive results in future."
