Behind every great woman could be a woman. Through dna I Can marathon, a part of the funds collected will go to project Nanhi Kali that sponsors the primary and secondary education of around one lakh girls in over 9 states in the country. It is a national sponsorship program that aims at bringing down the high rate of drop outs amongst girl children with academic and material support and also bringing up their learning skills. It has been associated with the marathon for the last three years.

Last year they raised rs1.5 lakh from the marathon.

According to the preliminary data of Census, 2011, the literacy rate of females is 65% whereas for males it is 82%. The child sex ratio has fallen from 927:1000 to 914:1000 (females:males). As per the Annual Status of Education Report, 2013, almost 68% of children in standard 3 in govt schools cannot read 1st standard level text and almost 79% children in std 5 cannot do mathematical divisions. Nanhi Kali provides grade competent education before and after school for the girls who have found sponsors and according to their reports the drop-out rates in their project has gone below 10%. Most of the girls that they have been sponsoring have gone to study beyond school and even in the field of engineering and vocational courses at Polytechnic institutes. Some of them return to tutor at Nanhi Kali. The project also gives career counselling before the girls graduate from secondary school.

The project is spread in many urban, rural and even tribal areas of states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra where needy and underprivileged girls that are enrolled in govt schools belong to below poverty line, schedule caste/schedule tribe or migrant communities. They are generally first generation learners with younger siblings and of single parent and are chosen as Nanhi kalis.

To support a Nanhi Kali for a year it costs Rs 3000 for a girl studying in class 1 to 5 and Rs 4200 for girls in class 6 to 10. The donor gets the profile of the girl they sponsor and her living conditions. The donor also gets a progress report every six months to track the academic progress.

dna has been supporting 101 girls in 3 states and these girls will get to continue another year in school with the funds generated from the marathon. Swati Srivastava, the head of resource mobilisation and corporate partnerships said that partnering with marathons helps with donations and awareness. "If a girl is not educated the chances of her getting used, being married off early and bearing a child at a much earlier age are very high. She will not know how to protect herself from abuse, walk out of abusive relations or support her own livelihood. Without education she will be forced to live a life of others will. Our experience with the DNA I Can Women's Half Marathon has always been wonderful. This is the third year of Project Nanhi Kali's association with the run. It is an association which we are very proud of as this is the only half marathon which is dedicated exclusively to women. The run provides a great platform to celebrate womanhood. DNA I Can Women's Half Marathon epitomises Project Nanhi Kali's spirit of freedom and empowerment. Funds raised through the event have helped us support the education of over a hundred underprivileged girl children across India," she said.

The project which began in 1996, is a jointly managed by the K.C. Mahindra Education trust and Naandi Foundation which focuses on child rights, safe drinking water and sanitation and sustainable livelihoods.
