While India's first Monorail corridor connecting eastern suburbs with south Mumbai is non-functional since November 2017, RA Rajeev, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA said that restarting the operations is a complex issue, and added that the MMRDA is trying its best to restart the operations within the next six months. He also said that the MMRDA is working on legal aspects to terminate the contract with current operator LTSE without forfeiting its bank guarantee.

What is the future plan about Mumbai Monorail? When will it be made operational and will it be operated by the Railways or the MMRDA? And if MMRDA is going to remain in charge, will it operate the system itself or appoint a contractor?

We want to make the operations of Monorail function normal as soon as possible. However, restarting the operations is a complex issue and will take a maximum of six months. And in terms of who is going to operate it, the cheapest bidder will be given the task to run Monorail be it the Railways or a private operator.

Is MMRDA working towards terminating the contract of current operator LTSE?

Yes, we are working on legal aspects to terminate the contract with current operator LTSE. Earlier this month I was told that they asked their employees to sit at home and not come for work. They, being the operator, should be acting more responsibly and should have remained onboard considering the arbitration process is currently ongoing.

How are you planning to run Monorail in a situation wherein the procurement of spare parts is required? Are we contemplating of buying new trains?

We will certainly be buying new trains for normal operations of Mumbai Monorail considering there is no other alternative at the moment. The current operator is not supplying us with new trains. There has been a severe lack of responsibility on the operator's part for which they can be held responsible.
