A 60-year-old resident of Virar was arrested for allegedly strangling his wife and then dumping her body in a gunny bag after she refused to serve him food. The accused has been remanded to police custody for five days.

The body of Tai Bhaskar Jadhav, 50, was found in a gunny bag on Monday at Mangalwadi, Agashi, after the police arrested her husband Govind Jadhav.

"When we were told that Jadhav's second wife was missing and that he had not reported the incident, we picked him up and he confessed to the crime," said an officer from the Arnala coastal police station.

"Jadhav said that his wife did not give food, which led to an argument. He strangled her, and then decided to dump her body in a gunny bag in panic," said Sandeep Shiwale, assistant inspector.

"We have arrested him under section 302 (murder), 201 (destroying evidence) of the Indian Penal Code. We produced him in a Vasai court where he was remanded to police custody for five days. We are investigating further," said Shiwale.
