Starting today, you have three days left to enroll as a voter for the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections. Eligible citizens can include their name in the voters' list latest by September 17, up to 5 pm in the island city and suburbs. The enrollment process is currently going on in 10 Vidhan Sabha constituencies and in 26 constituencies of Mumbai suburban district.

The Election Commission (EC) has enrolled 46,000 voters in Mumbai city and 1,41,000 voters in Mumbai suburban. It may be noted that names of thousands of electors were deleted from the voters' list during last Lok Sabha election. The EC took serious note of this and ordered that all eligible voters must be included in revised electoral roll. This resulted in an elaborate drive to facilitate the participation of citizens in the poll process.

Shaila A, collector, Mumbai city, and district chief electoral officer, said "The voters' identity card is valid only if your name is registered in the electoral roll. The card does not permit you to cast your vote unless your name is registered. So every citizen should check their name in electoral roll. The roll has been put up on the website of the chief electoral officers and returning officers. As per EC rules, forms will be accepted till 10 days before the filling of nominations for candidates begin."

Maya Patole, deputy chief election officer, Mumbai city, said "The final list of voters would be ready after office hours on September 17. All registered eligible voters will be issued voters identity card before elections."

How to check your name in the voters' list
Log on to the election commission website ceo.maharashtra.gov.in and use the search option on the main page to find whether your name is in the electoral roll. Or, you can call the election commission on 1950/1800221950O, or send an SMS on 869889966 giving your ten-digit voter identity number.
