On Monday, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) commissioner presented a Rs 3,965-crore budget which presented the revenue and expenditure to be incurred by the civic body for the year 2018-19. Setting the budget apart, for the first time any municipal corporation in the country thought about improving the happiness index of its citizens. The civic chief spoke about various initiatives with a budget of over Rs 75 crore meant to contribute to the overall happiness of Thanekars with an added bonus of no tax increase this fiscal.
For instance, there will be a global challenge fund of Rs 5 crore for start-ups. "The fund will be given to the most innovative start-ups," said TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal. Similarly, Rs 30 lakh has been allotted for a ham radio center to improve the conversational skills of school children. TMC has also allocated Rs 25 crore to set up vocational training centers. Special vehicles will move around the city to provide health care to cancer and tuberculosis patients. Rs 1 crore has been allotted to set up mental health counseling centers.
To tackle the traffic problem in Thane, an adaptive traffic management system will be set up at a cost of Rs 6 crore. "This is done in coordination with Google, wherein Google Maps will be synchronised with traffic signals.
A google adapter will be installed on the signal and it will provide information to motorists about the traffic situation as well as help evaluate the signal timing," explained Jaiswal. "TMC is the only corporation in the world which is doing this project with Google and it will be done by April-end or May on a pilot basis," he adds.
These projects will be done on PPP (public private partnership), viability gap funding, etc., with no cost to TMC
