It was an uneven performance by rain in the city on Monday, with parts, particularly South Mumbai, witnessing scanty showers, while the suburban region getting subjected to a heavy spell.

Life and movement in the city, however, remained largely unaffected by the day's rainfall — road, rail and air traffic continued without any problem.

The city received an average of 39.33mm of rain till 6pm. Areas of South Mumbai recorded 27mm, while western and eastern suburbs got 47mm and 44mm, respectively.

According to the IMD scale, Colaba received 6mm of rain, while Santa Cruz got 45.6mm.

There was also heavy flooding for close to an hour in south-central region of the city. Sion's Road no. 24 and Mukhyadhyapak Marg were submerged under one foot of water.

"Traffic had to be diverted from Road no. 24 following the water-logging, while the other stretch experienced slow vehicular movement," a local civic ward official said. He cited high tide of 4.11 metres in the Arabian Sea for the water-logging in these low-lying areas, besides the downpour.

Water receded as soon as the tide level normalised in the sea, allowing floodgates to be opened for the water to drain out, he explained.

Apart from Sion, 10 other areas in the suburbs saw water-logging after short rain spells.

A total of 19 trees toppled in the course of the day — gulmohar, jamun, raintree, almond, ashoka, shevar, mango and palm. No injuries or casualties were reported.

The weatherman has predicted scanty showers across the city in the next 24 hours.
