The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the state home department to compensate a senior citizen with Rs 5 lakh after he was harassed and tortured at a police station.

According to the SHRC, complainant Dattatray Nimje (75), a veterinarian who worked for the animal husbandry department, had alleged that he was assaulted by two policemen inside Wadala TT police station in 2012 after he encountered some issues at his housing society in Bhakti Park, Wadala. "The Commission's order has come to me as a huge relief," Nimje said.

In his complaint to the SHRC, Nimje had alleged that when he visited the police station, the other residents against who he had complained, also followed him there, after which two policemen, assistant police inspector Tukaram Jadhav and police-sub inspector Ganesh Kanade assaulted him instead of catering to his complaint.

Another police officer, then helped Nimje lodged a complaint. However, Nimje then moved to the SHRC against the errant police officers. Subsequently, the then DCP Zone IV had ordered an enquiry into the matter. Jadhav and Kanade were held guilty of misconduct and it was recommended that their increment be stopped for two years. The SHRC recently directed the home department to pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh within six weeks.
