According to the Health Management Information System (HMIS) data, a total of 102 women in Maharashtra died after undergoing tubectomy (female sterilization surgery) and 10 men died after undergoing vasectomy (male sterilization surgery) from 2008 to 2017.
Out of the 102 women who died, the highest number of women deaths were from Mumbai, Pune and Akola. In Mumbai, 19 women died after tubectomy, number of deaths in Pune was 12 and Akola 7.
Out of 10 males who died, five of them were from Akola and one each in Aurangabad, Mumbai, Pune and Solapur.
Speaking about the higher number of deaths in the city in comparison to rural areas of the state, Dr Archana Patil, Additional Director of Family Welfare, Maharashtra, said, “The cases are referred to the city from rural areas due to lack of medical equipment. The number of cases are not written according to residential details because of which we can see more cases in the city. Also, the number of cases is decreasing every year. In 2017, the number of tubectomy deaths is seven, less than last few years. The state has been taking steps to decrease the sterilization surgery deaths.”
Patil further added, “We have started attributable and non-attributable category data which will help us to identify whether the deaths are due to sterilization or other health problems.”
While the HMIS data reveals that since 10 years, 19 women died due to tubectomy in Mumbai, an RTI application filed to the BMC health department by activist Chetan Kothari reveals that the total number of deaths due to tubectomy in the city is 33.
“The data given by BMC through RTI is different from the data on HMIS website. The data also states that male sterilization is far safer than female sterilization and hence males should opt for it more,” said Chetan Kothari.
Discrepancy in no. of deaths: Activist
