Shiv Sena has decided not to support ally Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in their demand of keeping Deonar abattoir shut for four days during Paryushan — week-long Jain Festival and four days during Ganeshotsav.

A BJP MLA has written to municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta demanding the shutting down of Deonar abattoir. On Friday, the BMC announced that as per directives of the government and according to a GR issued by the urban development department in 2004, the abattoir would be shut only for two days — on August 29 and September 5.

Sena has adopted a clear and firm stand on the issue and resolved that the party would not support any additional days of meat ban other than those two days. "Why is this demand of shutting of Deonar abattoir during Ganpati should be raised? It has not been the demand in the past years and we do not advocate such demands and will not even support meat ban on any additional days," said Trushna Vishwasrao, leader of the House and party leader in the BMC.

In a letter sent to Mehta, BJP MLA Raj Purohit has demanded that the abattoir be kept shut not only for four days of Paryushan but also another four days of Ganeshotsav. "I am not opposing anyone eating meat, but then keeping in mind the sentimental value of the Jain community. I am demanding that the slaughter house be kept shut. I have already spoken to the commissioner who has said that he would check the feasibility of it," said Purohit.

It maybe recollected that prior to Paryushan last year, Vishwamaitri Trust — a Jain trust lead by two BJP MLAs, namely Raj Purohit and Atul Bhatkhalkar — met Mehta seeking a ban on meat on all the eight days of Paryushan, as it was imposed in the case of Mira-Bhayander last year. Following an uproar, the eight-day ban was revoked and only a two-day ban was allowed. Even Mira Bhayander region decided to follow the two-day ban as was decided by the state government.

Ironically, BJP members in the BMC are also not too keen on supporting the MLA's demand.
