Many schools and colleges in Thane have decided to be part of the Swachh Bharat campaign and not only the students, but even the staff will participate whole-heartedly. Most of them cancelled the holiday scheduled for Thursday and asked students to be part of the cleanliness drive initiated by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya".
"As schools had declared a holiday, many who wanted to be part of this initiative, have cancelled the holiday and have gone ahead with the drive. Since it's a long weekend, followed by exams and elections, most schools will be following this drive in phases throughout the month. As per the circular, it is a month-long programme. We have asked other schools also to stick to it as it eases pressure on students and staff. Also, children will understand its importance and make it a regular affair rather than for a single day," says RJ Rajput, secretary of Thane District Principals' Association.
Birla College in Kalyan called all the students on Thursday to clean the college campus. "Students gathered at the college ground, they were divided into groups and assigned various areas to clean. Few of them began the drive from Kalyan station as well. This was followed by maintaining cleanliness within the college as well. All the broken dustbins were mended," said Nitin Barve, professor at Birla College.
A similar activity was planned by students of Bedekar College. "We called students who are part of NCC and NSS camps on Thursday. They ensured that the school premises are cleaned. Apart from that, we will also have a plastic-free campus henceforth," said Narayan Barse, a professor.
Schools like MH High School planned sessions that highlight the need for cleanliness in the surroundings. Apart from this, they also spoke about the work of Mahatma Gandhi.
